Nicole Waidlein appointed new editor-in-chief of Wirtschaftsdienst and Intereconomics journals

Kiel, Hamburg, 1 September 2023: The ZBW - Leibniz Information Centre for Economics announces that Dr. Nicole Waidlein, PhD economist and former scientific editor at Wirtschaftsdienst, will take over the position of editor-in-chief of the economic policy journals Wirtschaftsdienst and Intereconomics with immediate effect. Nicole Waidlein's vision is to position the journals as leading sources of economic policy analysis and to expand their influence among policymakers and academics.

As of September 1, 2023, Dr. Nicole Waidlein, an experienced economist and former scientific editor at Wirtschaftsdienst, will now take over as editor-in-chief for the two journals Wirtschaftsdienst and Intereconomics. Her goal is to establish these journals as authoritative resources for economic policy discourse and to increase their prominence in the policy and academic landscape.

With a rich academic background that includes research and teaching positions at the Universities of Hohenheim, Mannheim, and Kiel, Dr. Nicole Waidlein brings extensive expertise in economics and economic history. "As an economic historian, it is a particular pleasure to be editor-in-chief of two journals with such a rich tradition," says Dr. Nicole Waidlein.

Nicole Waidlein, who has been editor of Wirtschaftsdienst at the ZBW for almost three years, will strengthen the role of knowledge transfer between economic research, politics and society. She emphasises that the current situation, with challenges such as the energy price crisis, inflation, digital transformation and structural change, shows how important these journals are for the economic policy discourse. "Our authors offer well-founded analyses and proposed solutions that can be taken into account and implemented by policymakers. The fact that the journals are noticed by policymakers is also reflected in the fact that the German finance minister recently made a statement in Wirtschaftsdienst," says Dr Nicole Waidlein.

Their primary goal is to further enhance the reputation of the two open access journals. "We are building on the positioning of the journals as a source of up-to-date, scientifically sound content relevant to economic policy," explains Dr Nicole Waidlein. Other goals include increasing reach and visibility, especially through collaborations such as with YES! – Young Economic Solutions and to optimise the digital presence.
