Zu den profilierten Kritikern der traditionellen Wirtschaftstheorie gehört der britische Ökonom Ronald Coase, der im Dezember 2010 seinen einhundertsten Geburtstag feiern konnte und immer noch als Forscher aktiv ist. Er bezeichnet die herrschende Lehre als "blackboard economics".

Mit seinen Aufsätzen zur Theorie der Transaktionskosten ("The nature of the firm", 1937) und der Eigentumsrechte ("The problem of social cost", 1960) trat Coase als Pionier der Neuen Institutionenökonomik hervor und erhielt 1991 den Wirtschafts-"Nobelpreis" der Schwedischen Reichsbank zugesprochen.

Inzwischen hat sich Coase der dynamischen chinesischen Wirtschaft zugewandt und plant eine Buchveröffentlichung zum Thema.
