Institutional view on research data

The purpose of the showcase application is to provide an institutional subset and view of the central repository’s data, which can easily be integrated into any institutional website, either as an iFrame to be embedded by the institution (which might be considered as an easy rather than a satisfactory technical solution), or as a stand-alone subpage being linked from the institution’s homepage, optionally using a proxy server for preserving the institutional domain namespace. While these solutions imply the standard way of hosting the showcase software, a third approach suggests the deployment of the showcase software on an institution’s server for customizing the application. In this case, every institution can modify the layout of their institutional view by customizing their institutional CSS file. Because using Bootstrap and LESS Compiling the CSS file, a lightweight possibility might be to modify only some LESS Variables compiling to an institutional CSS file.

SPARQL Lab

SPARQL allows for a very flexible querying of RDF datasets. ZBW Labs supports this with it's experimental public endpoints. Yet, useful SPARQL queries soon tend to become quite complex. Often great examples are burried in piles of other code. Therefore, we have started a repository for queries, where the queries are grouped by their intended application, and each query is described shortly. By clicking a link, they are loaded from GitHub and executed, or can be modified and re-run in a language-sensitive "SPARQL IDE" (further info and code here).

EconStor LOD

The Linked Open Data movement has gained momentum in the library world, resulting into a set of LOD publications from bibliographic metadata. By publishing the metadata from our repository for Working Papers in Economics and Business Studies (econstor.eu), we provide more than 40.000 bibliographic records as RDF triples. The dataset contains links to well-established external datasets for thesauri in Economics like our own STW and the JEL classification. The triplification is based on D2R-Server and can be both viewed as HTML pages and queried and processed via SPARQL.

20th Century Press Archives

Here you can find the historical press clippings archives of the ZBW as Linked Open Data. Nearly 7,000 dossiers on individual persons and companies with more than 250,000 press clippings and company reports can be made addressable and citable down to page level. They can be viewed comfortably with the DFG viewer and are linked to data in the Linked Data Cloud.

A Guide to Journal Rankings

The community based assessment of scientific output including bibliometric indicators and rankings is becoming more and more important for researchers, publishers and libraries. Our Journal Ranking Guide (JRG) provides comprehensive information on more than 6.000 journals from different disciplines like economics, business studies, commerce and related social sciences. The database is maintained by our partner, the Institute for Employment Research of the Federal Employment Agency (IAB), and regularly updated for web presentation by ZBW. It comprises bibliometric information on journals and rankings and covers both top journals and well-established rankings in Economics and Business Studies. Moreover, it provides information on availability of top-ranked journals by linking to the German "Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek" (EZB) and information on Open Access policies from publishers by linking to SHERPA/RoMEO list.

Web Services for Economics

As the publisher of the STW Thesaurus for Economics, ZBW provides experimental thesaurus web services for use by humans and by machines. In the first instance these services are designed to support autosuggest functions and query expansion in the context of information retrieval applications. Parts of the delivered data originate from datasets which were created by third parties and shared through open licenses.

The services follow the REST design principles. All services uniformly support the HTTP GET method. Output can be obtained in various formats (experimentally including JSON-LD).

ZBW Labs Website is a semantically enriched directory of ZBW Labs Projects. Labs projects range from small showcases, which may or may not be part of a larger project, to full-fleged applications in beta state.

The new ZBW Labs website is based on Drupal 7 and uses RDFa, which is part of Drupal Core. Used vocabularies are Dublin Core Terms (dc), Description of a Project (doap) und Schema.org (schema).
