On 15 December 2018, the ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics started a systematical research into the provenance of objects that entered the collections of the ZBW under the Nazi regime.
The research project “Provenance research for literature acquired between 1933–1945 for what today is the ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics” is funded by the German Lost Art Foundation in Magdeburg.
The focus is on finding assets confiscated and seized by the National Socialists through persecution. At both branches of the ZBW, accessing documentation for the period of 1933–1945 contains cases where NS-looted objects are suspected.
The basis for the project are the Washington Principles regarding Nazi-confiscated art of 1998, and the Common Declaration of the Federal Government, Länder Governments and national associations of local authorities for finding and restituting looted cultural assets of 1999.
